Essential Gear for Cold-Weather Running and Walking
Here is our Advice Guys video on how to dress.
When snow and ice cover the ground, having the right gear can make all the difference in your comfort and safety while running or walking. Here are some key products that can help ensure better traction and warmth during winter workouts.
1. Traction Solutions for Snow and Ice
For added stability on slippery surfaces, consider using traction devices that attach to the outside of your shoes. Products like DueNorth and YakTrax are excellent options that provide superior grip, helping to prevent slips while walking or running.
If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, sheet metal screws can work just as well. These screws are easy to install in the outsole of your shoes and provide the same traction benefits as devices like YakTrax. Just keep in mind that if your shoes have air pockets in the sole, the screws might puncture these, so choose your footwear carefully.
Another effective solution is shoes with a ceramic outsole combined with Vibram technology. While this option is harder to find, it’s an excellent combination that delivers both durability and traction. The ceramic outsole helps grip icy surfaces, while Vibram offers exceptional performance in varied conditions.
Lastly, many brands now use Gore-Tex material in their shoes, which provides a waterproof upper layer. This helps keep snow, rain, and slush from entering your shoes, ensuring your feet stay dry and warm, no matter the weather. The Brooks Adrenaline GTX and Hoka Anacapa Low are both in store for you to try!
2. Socks: Keep Your Feet Warm and Dry
The right pair of socks is crucial when running in cold weather. Many runners opt for taller socks to cover the gap between the ankle and calf, but this is ultimately a matter of personal preference.
When it comes to warmth and moisture control, consider socks made from Merino Wool, SmartWool, or Breath Thermo. These materials are specifically designed to regulate temperature and wick moisture, ensuring your feet stay warm and dry throughout your run.
3. Bottoms: Comfort and Flexibility
When it comes to cold-weather running pants, tights tend to offer the best combination of warmth and flexibility. Personally, I prefer tights over baggy pants because they provide a snug fit that helps the body warm up faster and allows for full range of motion. The tightness of the fabric also helps trap body heat, keeping you warm without adding bulk.
For added protection, windbreaker boxers are a great option for men, offering an extra layer of warmth and wind protection without sacrificing comfort.
A great wind-proof, water-resistant option is the On Weather Pant.
4. Tops: Layering is Key
Layering is the most effective strategy for staying comfortable in cold weather. The typical layering system consists of three layers: a base layer, a middle layer, and an outer layer.
For milder conditions, you may only need two layers: a base layer and a weather proof outer layer. The base layer should be made of moisture-wicking, non-cotton material to keep sweat away from your skin and allow for ventilation. Avoid cotton, as it traps moisture and will leave you feeling damp and cold.
The middle layer (such as fleece or wool) is meant to retain heat, while the outer layer should be designed to protect you from wind, rain, and snow. Look for windproof and waterproof materials that are breathable and insulating. Depending on the temperature, the thickness of this layer can vary.
A great option for wind and waterproof is the Mizuno 20K ER Jacket.
Final Thoughts
Winter running and walking require the right gear to ensure comfort, safety, and performance. With the right traction devices, moisture-wicking socks, insulated bottoms, and smart layering, you can enjoy your outdoor workouts regardless of the weather. Stay warm, stay safe, and keep moving!
